Current Context: India and the United Kingdom launched the Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) in New Delhi.

  • GSCO is a data-driven platform that will monitor global critical mineral supply chains, identify risks and disruptions, generate market intelligence, and support policymaking.
  • It aims to strengthen resource security for industries dependent on critical minerals, including clean energy, electric vehicles, batteries, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing.
  • Joint initiative of: TEXMiN at IIT (ISM), Dhanbad, and University of Cambridge
  • Phase: Phase II of UK-India Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory

About CRITICAL MINERALS SUPPLY CHAIN

  • A Critical Minerals Supply Chain refers to the entire network involved in the extraction, processing, refining, manufacturing, transportation, and recycling of critical minerals essential for modern industries and national security.
  • SUPPLY CHAIN STAGES: Mine → Processing → Refining → Manufacturing → End Use → Recycling
  • Exploration & Mining → Identification and extraction of mineral resources.

7.  SHIMLA TEMPERATURE RISES BY 2.5°C IN 10 YEARS DUE TO HEAT ISLAND EFFECT

Current Context: A study conducted by Shimla Municipal Corporation has revealed that land surface temperature (LST) in several areas of the city has increased by 1.7 to 2.5 degrees Celsius over the past decade.

ABOUT THE STUDY

  • A GIS-based study by the Shimla Municipal Corporation found that land surface temperatures in parts of Shimla increased by 7°C to 2.5°C between 2012 and 2023.
  • Primary causes: Rapid concretisation, construction of multi-storey buildings, declining green cover
  • Most affected areas: Shimla Bypass, Shoghi Bypass, Baluganj, Chakkar, Junga Road, Sanjauli Housing Board Colony, Enginegar, Mashobra, core area around the city
  • Metal roofs and dense construction areas: Showed relatively higher temperature increase

About HEAT ISLAND EFFECT

  • An urban heat island occurs when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby rural areas due to human activities and infrastructure
  • Causes: Replacement of natural land cover with buildings, roads, and other heat-absorbing infrastructure
  • Contributing factors in Shimla: Disappearing green belt, expansion of residential settlements (especially in Mashobra area), new apartments and commercial buildings between Khalini (Kali Bari) Road and old bus stand
