1.  NATIONAL CIVIL SERVICES DAY 2026

Current Context: National Civil Services Day 2026 will be observed on 21 April 2026 (Tuesday) in India to honour the dedication and service of civil servants, known as the “steel frame of India”.

• First Celebrated:2006 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi
• Historical Background:Commemorates the historic speech by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1947 at Metcalf House, Delhi, where he described civil servants as the “steel frame of India”

2. WORLD HEMOPHILIA DAY – 17 APRIL

Current Context: World Hemophilia Day is observed every year on 17 April to raise awareness about hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders.

• Led by:World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH)
• Focus:Early diagnosis, proper treatment, access to care for the people living with bleeding disorder hoga.

3. JONNAGIRI GOLD MINE TO BOOST INDIA’S DOMESTIC PRODUCTION

Current Context: India is set to witness a major milestone with the launch of the Jonnagiri gold project in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district, the country’s first large-scale private gold mine since Independence.

ABOUT JONNAGIRI GOLD MINE

• Developer:Geomysore Services India Pvt Ltd (backed by Thriveni Earthmovers & Infra and Deccan Gold Mines Ltd)
• Investment:Over ₹400 crore
• Production Capacity:
  • Certified resources: 13.1 tonnes of gold
  • Possible reserve: Up to 42.5 tonnes
  • Peak production: Nearly 1,000 kg of refined gold per year for next 15 years
• India’s Gold Import:Over 800 tonnes every year
• Current Major Producer:Hutti Gold Mines, Karnataka (~1.5 tonnes annually)
• Historic Mine Closed:Kolar Gold Fields (closed in 2000)

NATIONAL

4. INDIA’S FIRST WATER-NEUTRAL RAILWAY DEPOT

Current Context: Kankaria Coaching Depot in Ahmedabad has become India’s first ‘water-neutral’ railway depot by recycling wastewater used in coach washing and maintenance.

ABOUT THE DEPOT

• Technology Used:Phytoremediation (eco-friendly process using specially selected plants to absorb pollutants)
• Multi-Stage Purification:Wetland treatment → carbon filtration → sand filtration → UV disinfection
• Water Savings:
  • Daily: Nearly 1.60 lakh litres
  • Annually: Around 5.84 crore litres

DEFENCE

5. INDIA-RUSSIA RELOS PACT DEEPENS DEFENCE LOGISTICS TIES

Current Context: India and Russia have operationalised the Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement (RELOS), giving both countries access to each other’s military bases, ports, and air facilities.

ABOUT RELOS PACT

• Access:Military bases, ports, and air facilities in war and peacetime
• Key Provisions:
  • Station up to 3,000 military personnel in each other’s territory at a time
  • Deployment of up to 5 warships and 10 military aircraft simultaneously
  • Support includes refuelling, repairs, replenishment, spare parts, maintenance
• Comparison:India already has LEMOA (Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement) with United States.

6. PRADHAN MANTRI GRAM SADAK YOJANA (PMGSY)

Current Context: The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of PMGSY-III beyond March 2025 up to March 2028.

ABOUT PMGSY

• Launched:December 25, 2000
• Nodal Ministry:Ministry of Rural Development
• Objectives:Providing all-weather road connectivity to unconnected habitations in rural areas
• Eligibility Criteria (2001 Census):
  • Plain areas: Habitations with population of 500 or more
  • North-Eastern, Himalayan states, and Himalayan UTs: Population of 250 or more
• Implementation:State Governments/UT Administrations through Programme Implementation Units (PIUs) and District Rural Development Agencies (DRDAs)

7. RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT (RBM) SCHEME

Current Context: The Government of India has approved the continuation of the River Basin Management (RBM) Scheme for the period 2026-27 to 2030-31 with a significantly increased outlay of ₹2,183 crore.

• Nodal Ministry:Ministry of Jal Shakti
• Previous Outlay:₹1,276 crore
• New Outlay (2026-31):₹2,183 crore
• Key Features:
  • Integrated basin planning and master plans
  • Scientific survey using GIS, remote sensing, hydrological modeling
  • Interlinking of Rivers (ILR) through National Water Development Agency (NWDA)
  • Flood and erosion control (e.g., protection of Majuli Island)
  • Community-based interventions (springshed management)
• NWDA Status:
  • 30 river link projects identified
  • Feasibility Reports completed for 26 projects
  • Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) completed for 15 projects

9. INDIA PLANS 100 GW NUCLEAR POWER CAPACITY BY 2047

Current Context: India has outlined an ambitious plan to expand its nuclear power capacity more than tenfold, from the current 8.8 GW to 100 GW by 2047.

• The Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, 2025, enacted on December 20, 2025, modernizes India’s nuclear legal framework. It enables private sector participation, grants statutory status to the AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board), and replaces the 1962 and 2010 acts.
