Current Context: International Youth Day is observed on 12 August to highlight youth-related challenges, opportunities, and contributions to sustainable development.

• Proclaimed by: United Nations General Assembly. In year 1999, through UNGA Resolution.
• First observed: 12 August 2000
• The day is based on the recommendations of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, held in Lisbon in 1998.
• It provides a platform to draw attention to issues affecting young people and promote their meaningful participation in society.

2. GOVT DEBT-TO-GDP RATIO HITS 58.2% IN FY26

Current Context: India’s general government debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 58.2% in FY2025-26, which was 210 basis points (2.1 percentage points) above the target of 56.1%.

WHAT IS DEBT-TO-GDP RATIO?

• The debt-to-GDP ratio measures a government’s total outstanding debt relative to the size of the country’s economy.
• The figure refers to general government debt, covering the combined debt position of the Central and State Governments.
• It indicates the government’s debt burden and fiscal sustainability.
• A higher ratio generally means a larger portion of government resources may be required to service public debt.

3. PRAKRITI GYAN DHAM – CSIR-NBRI’s FIRST ECO-EDUCATIONAL HUB

Current Context: Prakriti Gyan Dham, the first eco-educational centre of CSIR-NBRI, has been inaugurated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

• It aims to connect scientific knowledge with environmental education through direct interaction with plants, biodiversity and ecological systems.
• The centre is designed particularly to promote awareness among students, teachers, researchers and the general public.
• ABOUT CSIR-NBRI (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research – National Botanical Research Institute)
• Location: Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
• Established: 1953 as the National Botanical Gardens (NBG).
• It was taken over by CSIR in 1978 and renamed the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI).
• It is one of the constituent laboratories of CSIR, under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

4. INDIA ACHIEVES LANDMARK 300 GW NON-FOSSIL FUEL POWER CAPACITY

Current Context: India crossed the 300 GW milestone of installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity as of 31 July 2026, marking an important step in the country’s clean-energy transition.

ABOUT NON-FOSSIL FUEL POWER

• Non-fossil fuel sources generate electricity without directly using fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.
• India’s non-fossil capacity primarily includes solar, wind, hydropower and nuclear power.
• It also includes other renewable sources such as biomass and small hydro.

5. INDIA’S ASIATIC LION POPULATION REACHES 891

Current Context: India’s Asiatic lion population increased from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025.

ABOUT ASIATIC LION

• Scientific Name: Panthera leo persica.
• It is a subspecies of lion found naturally in India.
• Today, the last remaining wild population of Asiatic lions is found in Gujarat.
• The major population occurs in and around Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary.

6. INDEPENDENCE DAY 2026: VANDE MATARAM TO BE SUNG FROM RED FORT

Current Context: 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026 will feature Vande Mataram from Red Fort ramparts for the first time.

The 2026 celebrations will prominently showcase “Yuva Shakti” (Youth Power), highlighting the contribution of young Indians to nation-building.

VANDE MATARAM

• Composer: Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
• The song first appeared in his novel Anandamath.
• It became an important symbol of India’s freedom struggle.
• “Vande Mataram” is India’s National Song, while “Jana Gana Mana” is the National Anthem.
• In 2026, the nation is also commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram. The Government launched a year-long commemoration of the song, which began in November 2025.

7. INDIAN PHYSICIST DEEPAK DHAR WINS 2026 DIRAC MEDAL

Current Context: Indian theoretical physicist Prof. Deepak Dhar was named a recipient of the 2026 Dirac Medal by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) on 8 August 2026.

ABOUT DIRAC MEDAL

• He shares the 2026 award with Bernard Derrida, Marc Mézard and Haim Sompolinsky for their important contributions to statistical mechanics.
• Awarding institution: ICTP, based in Trieste, Italy.
• Named after: British theoretical physicist Paul Dirac, one of the founders of modern quantum mechanics.
• Instituted: 1985.

ABOUT DEEPAK DHAR

• Field: Theoretical physics, particularly statistical physics and complex systems.
• Current position: INSA Distinguished Professor, International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR), Bengaluru.
• Dhar has made major contributions to the understanding of statistical mechanics, stochastic processes and self-organised criticality.
• His work has helped explain how simple microscopic rules can produce complex collective behaviour in large systems.

8. JUSTICE ABHA NAYAR PATEL BECOMES FIRST WOMAN OF INDIAN ORIGIN APPOINTED TO ZAMBIA’S SUPREME COURT

Current Context: Justice Abha Nayar Patel appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of Zambia.

ABOUT ABHA NAYAR PATEL

• Born: 24 April 1966, New Delhi, India.
• She later built her legal career in Zambia and became a prominent member of the Zambian Bar.
• Admitted to the Zambian Bar:
• She was conferred the rank of State Counsel in 2016.

JUDICIAL CAREER

• High Court of Zambia: Appointed in March 2019.
• Served as Judge-in-Charge of the Commercial Division at the Kitwe High Court.
• Court of Appeal: Appointed in April 2023.
• First woman of Indian originappointed to Zambia’s Supreme Court
