8. ANCIENT TAKRI SCRIPT GETS DIGITAL LIFELINE IN HIMACHAL’S SALOONI COLLEGE

Current Context: Government College, Salooni, Chamba has entered into a collaboration with Him Sanskriti Shodh Sansthan, Anni, Kullu, to revive and promote the ancient Takri script, which stands on the verge of extinction.

ABOUT THE INITIATIVE

• Objective:To combine traditional knowledge with modern technology to safeguard centuries-old manuscripts written in Takri script
• Key Activities:
  • Digitisation of rare documents and handwritten texts
  • Creation of permanent digital archive for researchers and scholars
  • Special training programmes for students and local youth (reading, writing, interpretation of Takri)
  • Workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns
• Significance:
  • Takri script was once widely used across the western Himalayan region for administrative and literary purposes
  • Script has gradually declined due to dominance of modern scripts
  • Absence of formal teaching and limited awareness among younger generations
