2. EPFO OFFICER SELECTED FOR WORLD BANK–MILKEN PFAM PROGRAM

Current Context: Vivekanand Gupta from Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has been selected for the World Bank–Milken Public Financial Asset Management (PFAM) Program 2025–26. He is the first officer from EPFO and India to join this elite global financial cohort.

    • 11 from Central Banks

    • 3 from Sovereign Wealth Funds

    • 2 from major Pension Funds

4. FREEDOM EDGE MILITARY EXERCISE

Current Context: United States, South Korea, and Japan have begun their joint air and naval military exercise “Freedom Edge” near South Korea’s Jeju Island. The exercise aims to strengthen trilateral defense cooperation in response to North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile threats. North Korea has criticized the drill as a provocation.

5. RED FORT

Current Context: A recent study has found that a ‘black crust’ is forming on the walls of the Red Fort due to high levels of air pollution in Delhi.

About Red Fort

  • Location: Delhi, India (on banks of river Yamuna)

  • Built By: Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1639

  • Architects: Ustad Ahmad Lahauri and Ustad Hamid

  • Original Name: Quila-e-Mubarak (Blessed Fort)

  • Purpose: Palace fort of Shahjahanabad, new Mughal capital

  • UNESCO Status: World Heritage Site (designated in 2007)

Historical Significance

  • Served as Mughal emperors’ residence for nearly 200 years (until 1857).

  • Every year on Independence Day (15 August), Indian Prime Minister hoists the national flag and addresses the nation from its ramparts.

Architecture of Red Fort

  • Massive red sandstone walls (75 feet high).

  • Octagonal layout (longer north-south axis).

  • Combination of Persian, Timurid, and Hindu design traditions.

Famous Structures

  • Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience): 60 red sandstone pillars.

  • Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience): White marble pavilion.

Other Features

  • 2 Main Gates: Lahore Darwaza (west) and Delhi Darwaza (south).

6. INDIA ADDS 7 NEW SITES TO UNESCO TENTATIVE LIST

Current Context: India’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO announced that seven new sites have been added to India’s Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, taking the total to 69 sites (49 cultural, 3 mixed, 17 natural).

About the UNESCO Tentative List

  • Purpose: A prerequisite for nomination to the final UNESCO World Heritage List

  • Significance: Indicates international recognition of a site’s Outstanding Universal Value

7 New Natural Heritage Sites Added

  1. Deccan Traps (Maharashtra): Ancient volcanic formations of Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar.

  2. St Mary’s Island Cluster (Karnataka): Columnar basaltic lava formations near Udupi.

  3. Meghalayan Age Caves (Meghalaya): Geological network from the Meghalayan age in East Khasi Hills.

  4. Naga Hill Ophiolite (Nagaland): Rare oceanic crust rocks in Kiphire.

  5. Erra Matti Dibbalu (Andhra Pradesh): Red sand dunes near Visakhapatnam.

  6. Tirumala Hills (Andhra Pradesh): Biodiversity-rich hills of Tirupati.

  7. Varkala Cliff (Kerala): Coastal laterite cliff with fossil-rich sediments.

7. POLYPROPYLENE

Current Context: The Prime Minister of India has laid the foundation stone for a Polypropylene (PP) plant at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in Golaghat, Assam.

  • Category: Synthetic resin, part of polyolefin family
