1.  INTERNATIONAL EQUAL PAY DAY

Current Context: International Equal Pay Day is observed annually on 18 September to promote equal pay for work of equal value and address gender-based wage inequality.

ABOUT INTERNATIONAL EQUAL PAY DAY

• International Equal Pay Day highlights the importance of equal remuneration for women and men performing work of equal value.
• It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2019.
• The first UN observance took place on 18 September 2020.
• The day is associated with efforts led by the Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC), a partnership involving the ILO, UN Women and OECD.

2. INDIAN DELEGATION ATTENDS 69TH COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY CONFERENCE

Current Context: 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference held in Cape Town, South Africa from 13-19 September 2026.

ABOUT COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY CONFERENCE

• The Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) is an annual gathering of parliamentarians and parliamentary officials from Commonwealth countries.
• Theme:“Strengthening International Law and Parliamentary Democracy in a Changing World Order: Commonwealth Leadership”

Key Activities:

• Bilateral meetings with South African officials
• Joint Network Workshop on “Delivering Inclusivity Measures in Capacity Strained Parliaments”

3. INAUGURAL INTERNATIONAL SPACE SUMMIT 2026 HELD IN PARIS

Current Context: The inaugural International Space Summit 2026 was held on 9-10 September 2026 at the Grand Palais in Paris, France, to discuss international cooperation, space security, innovation and Europe’s strategic autonomy in space.

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE SUMMIT

• The summit was hosted by France under President Emmanuel Macron.
• It brought together representatives and stakeholders from approximately 120 countries, including government officials, space agencies, researchers and private space companies.
• The summit aimed to promote dialogue on the future of the global space sector and strengthen international cooperation.
• Key discussions included space traffic management, satellite communications, launch capabilities, space security and technological sovereignty.

4. NUAKHAI FESTIVAL

Current Context: PM extended greetings on the auspicious occasion of Nuakhai.

ABOUT NUAKHAI FESTIVAL

• Type:Important social festival of Western Odisha
• Meaning:“Nua” = new, “Khai” = food
• Objective:Agricultural festival to welcome new rice of the season
• Observed on:Fifth day of lunar fortnight of Bhadrapada (August-September)

Rituals:

• Nine sets of rituals as prelude to celebration
• Offering newly harvested crop (Nabanha) to presiding deities
• Nuakhai Juhar – major ritual of the festival

5. HYDERABAD LIBERATION DAY 2026

Current Context: Hyderabad Liberation Day is marked on 17 September to commemorate the integration of Hyderabad into India in 1948.

ABOUT HYDERABAD LIBERATION DAY

• Operation Polo:Commenced 13 September 1948, surrender on 17 September 1948

Historical Background:

• Hyderabad:Largest princely state in British India
• Ruler:Mir Osman Ali Khan (Seventh Nizam)
• Standstill Agreement:Concluded on 29 November 1947
• Operation Polo:Commanded by Major General J.N. Chaudhuri
• Surrender:Major General Syed Ahmed El Edroos surrendered on 17 September 1948

Post-1948:

• States Reorganisation Act, 1956 rearranged regions on linguistic lines
• Telangana became separate state on 2 June 2014

6. KUMIK DECLARED LADAKH’S FIRST HERITAGE VILLAGE

Current Context: Kumik village in Zanskar was declared Ladakh’s first designated Heritage Village on 15 September 2026.

ABOUT KUMIK VILLAGE

• The declaration was made by Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, during the launch of the Ladakh Zanskar Festival 2026.
• Kumik is a high-altitude Himalayan settlement known for its traditional houses, sacred spaces, agricultural practices and Buddhist cultural traditions.
• The village preserves important Buddhist textual heritage, including Kanjur manuscripts and other Tibetan Buddhist materials.
• Its heritage represents the continuity of local knowledge, religious traditions and community life in the Zanskar region

Current Context: IPS officer Sanjukta Parashar became first woman officer to lead CRPF’s CoBRA unit.

Current Context: Veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag named recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024.
