ABOUT WORLD BIOFUEL DAY

  • The day commemorates the work of Sir Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine.
  • On 10 August 1893, Rudolf Diesel demonstrated his engine using peanut oil as fuel.
  • The occasion highlights the potential of vegetable oils and other renewable feedstocks as alternatives to petroleum-based fuels.

Current Context: International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed on 9 August to recognize the rights, culture, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples worldwide.

  • Proclaimed by: United Nations General Assembly in 1994.
  • The date marks the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982.

3. MECCA JOINT DETERRENCE AGREEMENT

Current Context: Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

ABOUT THE AGREEMENT

  • The agreement establishes a collective-defence commitment, under which an armed attack against one member is treated as an attack against all three.
  • The agreement aims to strengthen joint deterrence, defence cooperation and regional security.
  • Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan compared its collective-defence principle technically to Article 5 of NATO, although the agreement is not itself a NATO-style alliance.
  • The pact was developed over nearly three years.

KEY FEATURES

  • Collective defence: Attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
  • Defence cooperation: Greater coordination in military and security matters.
  • Permanent secretariat: A secretariat will be established in Saudi Arabia.
  • The agreement is described by its members as defensive, not directed against any particular country.

  • The Rail-Tech Park will serve as a dedicated industrial and technology hub for the railway sector.
  • It is intended to bring together railway equipment manufacturers, technology companies, startups and research institutions.

8. QADR-F MISSILE

Current Context: Qadr-F missile reportedly used in Iran’s conflicts with Israel.

ABOUT QADR-F MISSILE

  • The Qadr (Ghadr) missile family is an Iranian medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) family that has been reported in Iran’s missile operations against Israel.
  • Qadr-F is a variant of Iran’s Qadr ballistic-missile family.
  • It is designed for long-range strikes against regional targets.
  • The Qadr family is derived from the Shahab-3, itself based on the North Korean Nodong missile design.
  • Iranian Qadr missiles have been publicly associated with missile launches during the Iran-Israel conflict in 2026. However, specific identification of individual missiles used in particular strikes can be difficult from open-source evidence.

9. INDIAN NAVY-US NAVY EOD EXERCISE 2026

Current Context: The 8th edition of the India–US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Exercise began on 10 August 2026 at Kochi, Kerala.

  • It is a bilateral exercise between the Indian Navy and United States Navy.
  • The exercise focuses on Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), which involves detecting, identifying, rendering safe and disposing of explosive threats.
  • It provides an opportunity for both navies to share operational experience, techniques and best practices.
  • In the maritime environment, EOD capabilities are important for dealing with underwater mines, suspicious objects and explosive threats near ports and ships.
