Current Context: India participated in the inaugural United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance, held on 6-7 July 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.

ABOUT THE DIALOGUE

  • The UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance is the first universal, multi-stakeholder forum on Artificial Intelligence governance under the United Nations.
  • Established under United Nations General Assembly Resolution 79/325.
  • It implements the AI-related commitments contained in the Global Digital Compact, adopted at the Summit of the Future in September 2024.
  • First universal, multi-stakeholder forum on AI governance under the UN system

2. INDIA TO CHAIR UNCTAD CONSUMER PROTECTION MEETING

Current Context: India is chairing the 9th Session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts (IGE) on Consumer Protection Law and Policy, organised by UNCTAD, from 6-8 July 2026 at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland.

ABOUT THE MEETING

  • The IGE on Consumer Protection Law and Policy is the principal intergovernmental forum under UNCTAD for dialogue and cooperation on consumer protection.
    Objective
  • Strengthen international cooperation in consumer protection.
  • Exchange best practices among countries.

Current Context: ICMR’s AI-powered mental healthcare platform won Gold Award at National e-Governance Awards 2026.

6. ARROW-3 MISSILE DEFENCE SYSTEM

Current Context: Germany expands its missile defence network with a second Arrow-3 site planned in Bavaria.

ABOUT ARROW-3 MISSILE DEFENCE SYSTEM

  • Arrow-3 (Hetz-3) is an exo-atmospheric anti-ballistic missile defence system designed to intercept and destroy medium-range, intermediate-range, and some long-range ballistic missiles outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
  • It forms the top layer of Israel’s multi-layered missile defence network.
  • The Arrow-3 Missile Defence System has gained global attention due to its successful operational use by Israel against long-range ballistic missile threats and its export to Germany, making Germany the first country outside Israel to deploy the system.
  • Developed by:Israel and United States (jointly)

Key Features:

  • Two-stage solid-fuelled interceptors
  • Range: Up to 2,400 km
  • Intercepts threats at altitude of 100 km

DEFENCE

7.  DRDO LAUNCHES UNDERWATER FIBER OPTIC SENSING SYSTEM (UFOSS)

Current Context: DRDO launched a major naval project to deploy indigenous UFOSS on Indian Ocean seabed to detect submarines.

ABOUT UFOSS

  • The DRDO has initiated the development of the Underwater Fiber Optic Sensing System (UFOSS), an advanced seabed surveillance network designed to provide 24×7 underwater domain awareness in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
  • The project aims to strengthen India’s maritime security amid the increasing deployment of Chinese and Pakistani submarines in the Indian Ocean.
  • It is a fixed seabed surveillance network that uses fiber-optic cables integrated with acoustic and hydrographic sensors to continuously monitor underwater activity.
  • The system is regarded as India’s indigenous equivalent of strategic underwater surveillance grids deployed by major naval powers.
