2. WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

Current Context: World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on 5 October to celebrate teachers worldwide and recognise their contribution to education and society.

ABOUT WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

  • The 2026 theme is “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”
  • Observed: 5 October every year.
  • First observed: 1994.
  • Organisation: UNESCO, in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International.
  • The date commemorates the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which provides international standards concerning teachers’ rights, responsibilities, preparation, recruitment, employment and working conditions.

3. WORLD ANIMAL DAY

Current Context: World Animal Day is observed every year on 4 October to promote animal welfare, raise awareness about animal rights and encourage action against cruelty, neglect and unfair treatment of animals.

ABOUT WORLD ANIMAL DAY

  • Originator: Heinrich Zimmermann, a German-based Polish writer, publisher and animal welfare activist.
  • The first World Animal Day celebration was held on 24 March 1925 at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany, with more than 5,000 people
  • In 1929, the celebration was shifted to 4 October, the feast day of Francis of Assisi, regarded as the patron saint of animals and ecology.
  • In May 1931, a congress of animal protection organisations in Florence, Italy, unanimously accepted the proposal to make 4 October a universal World Animal Day.
  • Today, World Animal Day is coordinated by the Naturewatch Foundation, a UK-based animal welfare charity.

4. ANDHRA PRADESH PLANS GLOBAL HORTICULTURE HUB AT MADANAPALLE

Current Context: Andhra Pradesh laid the foundation stone for the ₹1 lakh crore Global Horticulture Hub at Madanapalle in Annamayya district.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

  • The project, known as Global Horticulture Hub – Rayalaseema Rising, aims to transform drought-prone Rayalaseema into a major horticulture production, processing and export centre.
  • Coverage: 10 districts, 303 mandals, 5,869 villages and 201 specialised horticulture clusters.
  • Aim: To transform the drought-prone Rayalaseema region into a global hub for production, processing and export of fruits and vegetables.
  • Horticulture cultivation area to increase from 8.41 lakh hectares to 14.41 lakh hectares.
  • Beneficiaries: Around 9.6 lakh farmers.
  • Focus crops: Mango, banana, tomato and pomegranate.
