1. Aditya-L1: Indian Solar Mission’s New Findings
Context: Researchers from Manipal Academy of Higher Education, ISRO, Department of Space and other institutions have used data from Aditya-L1 to study the processes associated with solar flares.
- The observations can improve scientific understanding of how energy builds up and is released in the Sun’s atmosphere.
About Aditya-L1
- Aditya-L1 is India’s first space-based observatory-class mission dedicated to studying the Sun.
- It was launched in 2023 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota, aboard PSLV-C57 in the PSLV-XL configuration.
- The spacecraft is positioned in a halo orbit around the Lagrange Point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, approximately 5 million km from Earth.
- The L1 location provides an important observational advantage:
- The spacecraft can maintain an almost continuous view of the Sun without regular occultation or eclipse, enabling uninterrupted monitoring of solar activity.
Solar Flares
- Solar flares are sudden and intense eruptions of electromagnetic radiation from the Sun.
- They are associated with the rapid release of magnetic energy stored in the solar atmosphere.
- Solar flares can occur along with other major solar disturbances, particularly Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs).
- Solar activity follows an approximately 11-year solar cycle, with periods of increased flare activity around the solar maximum.
Types of Solar Flares
- Solar flares are classified into five categories according to their intensity, from strongest to weakest:
- X-Class Flares:
- These are the most powerful category of solar flares.
- Major X-class events can cause widespread radio blackouts and intense radiation effects in the upper atmosphere.
- M-Class Flares:
- These are medium-intensity flares.
- They can produce short-duration radio blackouts, particularly affecting polar regions.
- Some M-class events may also be followed by minor radiation storms.
- C-Class Flares:
- These are relatively small flares with generally limited effects on Earth.
- At peak intensity, a C-class flare is approximately ten times weaker than an M-class flare.
- B-Class Flares:
- These are around ten times weaker than C-class flares and generally have negligible effects on Earth.
- A-Class Flares:
- These are the weakest category.
- They are at least ten times less intense than B-class flares and normally produce no noticeable effects on Earth.
- X-Class Flares:
How Aditya-L1 Studies Solar Flares
- The location of Aditya-L1 near the Sun-Earth L1 point allows continuous observation of solar activity across different wavelengths.
- Its instruments observe different layers and processes in the solar atmosphere.
- Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT):
- Observes the Sun using 11 near-ultraviolet (NUV) filters.
- It studies atmospheric layers extending from the upper photosphere to the chromosphere.
- Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer (SoLEXS):
- Measures X-ray emissions associated with energetic processes occurring in the solar atmosphere.
- High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer (HEL1OS):
- Observes higher-energy X-ray emissions associated with intense solar activity.
- Combining NUV and X-ray observations allows scientists to examine the relationship between:
- Processes occurring in the lower solar atmosphere; and
- Energy release in the solar corona during the development of solar flares.
Key Findings & Significance
- The observations indicate that repeated small-scale releases of energy may progressively destabilise the Sun’s magnetic fields.
- Such gradual destabilisation could contribute to the eventual triggering of large solar flares.
- The findings therefore improve scientific understanding of:
- Solar magnetic activity;
- Energy accumulation and release;
- Formation and evolution of solar flares; and
- Connections between different layers of the solar atmosphere.
Importance for Space Weather Forecasting
- Solar flares and related solar activity can influence the space environment surrounding Earth.
- Better understanding of flare formation can contribute to more reliable space-weather forecasting.
- Improved forecasting is important for protecting:
- Satellites and spacecraft;
- Astronauts exposed to enhanced radiation;
- Communication systems;
- Navigation and other space-based services; and
- Other critical technological infrastructure vulnerable to solar disturbances.

2. India-Japan Economic Partnership
Context: The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry concluded an official visit to Japan aimed at accelerating Japanese investment in India.
- The visit focused on strengthening economic cooperation, industrial partnerships, technology collaboration and resilient supply chains.
Major Highlights
- Investment Target: India and Japan are working towards the goal of attracting JPY 10 trillion in Japanese private investment into India over the next decade, as agreed during the Prime Minister’s visit to Japan in 2025.
- High-Level Engagement: A series of meetings were held with:
- Japanese government representatives;
- Financial institutions; and
- Business leaders.
- The discussions sought to accelerate investment, strengthen industrial partnerships and deepen bilateral economic relations.
- Six-Pillar Semiconductor Strategy: India presented a six-pillar framework covering:
- Chip design;
- Semiconductor machinery and materials;
- Semiconductor fabrication;
- ATMP/OSAT;
- Research and development; and
- Talent development.
- The visit provided fresh momentum to the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, particularly in trade, investment, technology, manufacturing and resilient supply chains.
Brief on India-Japan Relations
- Establishment of Relations:
- Following World War II, India chose to sign a separate Peace Treaty with Japan in 1952, marking the beginning of formal diplomatic relations.
- 2+2 Dialogue:
- India and Japan established the 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Dialogue in 2018.
- The mechanism provides a platform for discussions on strategic, defence and security issues.
- Evolution of Bilateral Relations:

Japanese Investment in India
- Japanese FDI equity inflows into India from 2000 to 2026 amounted to approximately USD 48.14 billion.
