1. New Curriculum on Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence

Context

Recently, the Union Education Minister introduced a new CBSE curriculum on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students of Classes 3 to 8, in line with the vision of the Central Board of Secondary Education and the National Education Policy 2020.

The curriculum will be implemented from the 2026–27 academic session.

What is the New CT–AI Curriculum?

The newly launched curriculum aims to build foundational computational skills among school students at an early stage.

These include:

  • logical reasoning
  • analytical thinking
  • problem-solving
  • pattern recognition

It has been introduced as a cross-curricular competency, meaning it will be integrated into subjects such as:

  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Languages
  • Social Sciences

rather than being taught as a standalone subject.

For Classes 3–5

The emphasis will be on activity-based learning through:

  • puzzles
  • sequencing tasks
  • pattern recognition exercises
  • text-based problem-solving activities

This stage is intended to strengthen basic reasoning and cognitive skills.

For Classes 6–8

From middle school onwards, students will be introduced to:

  • basic AI concepts
  • project-based applications
  • coding logic and algorithms
  • reflective and analytical assessments

This phase focuses on developing practical and conceptual understanding.

Need for the New CT–AI Curriculum

Mainstreaming AI Literacy

Artificial Intelligence is now deeply embedded in everyday life through:

  • search engines
  • recommendation systems
  • voice assistants
  • smart devices

The curriculum seeks to ensure that students become aware and informed users of technology, rather than passive consumers.

Global Competitiveness

  • The reform brings India’s school education system closer to global standards followed by countries like Singapore and South Korea.
  • It aims to prepare students for future digital economies and technology-driven employment markets.

Ethical Use of Technology

The curriculum also introduces students to ethical dimensions of AI, including:

  • algorithmic bias
  • privacy concerns

This helps promote responsible digital citizenship from an early age.

Concern Over Weak Foundational Literacy (LSRW)

  • A major concern remains the weak foundation in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (LSRW)

  • According to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024, more than 50% of Class 5 students in government schools are unable to read a Class 2-level text.

The survey covered nearly 23 lakh students across 88,000 schools.

NIPUN Bharat Mission

2. Sundarbans Losing Ability to Recover

Context

A recent scientific study has revealed that nearly 10–15% of the Sundarbans ecosystem is experiencing a process of “critical slowing down”, indicating that the forest is gradually losing its ability to recover from environmental disturbances and climate stress.

This is a serious warning sign of declining ecological resilience.

About Sundarbans

The Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most ecologically significant regions in the world.

It is the largest mangrove forest on Earth, located in the delta formed by the Ganges River, Brahmaputra River, and Meghna River, opening into the Bay of Bengal.

Geographical Distribution

The Sundarbans is shared between:

  • India – about 40%
  • Bangladesh – about 60%

Important Rivers

Major rivers flowing through this region include:

  • Muriganga
  • Raimangal
  • Harinbhanga
  • Saptamukhi
  • Thakuran
  • Matla

These tidal rivers are crucial for maintaining salinity balance and nutrient flow.

Key Findings of the Study

Climate-related Stress

  • Rising temperatures are adversely affecting species diversity and ecosystem resilience.
  • Higher temperatures reduce species richness and weaken the stability of the mangrove ecosystem.
  • Freshwater inflow and rainfall are critical because reduced freshwater availability leads to higher salinity levels, which negatively impacts mangrove growth.

  • The most severely impacted areas are located in the central Sundarbans, south-eastern seaward regions, cyclone-prone coastal stretches.
  • In the Indian part, the western Sundarbans is showing comparatively lower resilience than the Bangladesh side, especially near the northern boundaries.

Significance of the Sundarbans

The Sundarbans is extremely important for:

  • biodiversity conservation
  • coastal protection against storms and cyclones
  • carbon sequestration

Declining resilience directly threatens all these functions.

  • Conservation of older and mature mangrove trees is essential to preserve ecological stability.

  • Enhanced patrolling is needed to curb illegal logging, encroachment, forest degradation, Community Participation.
  • Local community involvement can improve awareness, sustainable resource use, conservation outcomes.
  • Climate-integrated Policy Measures
  • Policies must incorporate climate risks such as rising sea levels, salinity intrusion, cyclones, erratic rainfall for long-term ecosystem protection.

Conclusion

The declining resilience of the Sundarbans is a serious ecological warning.

Its weakening recovery capacity threatens biodiversity, climate regulation, coastal security, and human livelihoods.

A climate-sensitive and community-driven conservation strategy is essential for long-term sustainability.
