1. WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY 2026

Current Context: World Patient Safety Day is observed annually on 17 September under the leadership of the World Health Organization (WHO).

ABOUT WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY

• It was established by the 72nd World Health Assembly in 2019 through Resolution WHA72.6, which called for global action on patient safety.
• The day aims to raise awareness about preventable harm, medical errors and risks associated with healthcare delivery.
• Slogan 2026:“Safe care for life!”
• Focus:Safe care for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)

2. INDIA-MERCOSUR PREFERENTIAL TRADE AGREEMENT

Current Context: India and MERCOSUR announced on 14 September 2026 the launch of negotiations to expand the existing India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA).

ABOUT INDIA-MERCOSUR PTA

• MERCOSUR stands for Mercado Común del Sur, meaning Southern Common Market.
• It is a South American regional economic bloc.
• The India-MERCOSUR PTA was signed on 25 January 2004 and entered into force on 1 June 2009.
• A Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) provides preferential tariff concessions on selected products between participating countries. It is narrower in coverage than a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
• Under the existing PTA, India provides preferential tariff concessions on 450 tariff lines, while MERCOSUR provides concessions on 452 tariff lines.

WHAT IS MERCOSUR?

• MERCOSUR was established in 1991 through the Treaty of Asunción.
• Its founding members were Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
• Bolivia has subsequently become a member, while Venezuela’s membership remains suspended.
• The bloc seeks to promote regional economic integration, trade and movement of goods among its members.

3. INDIA’S LABOUR FORCE PARTICIPATION RATE RISES TO 55.6%

Current Context: India’s LFPR rose to 55.6% in August 2026 from 55.4% in July.

ABOUT LFPR

• Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) is the percentage of the population of working age that is either working or actively seeking/available for work.
• In simple terms, LFPR tells us how many people are participating in the labour market, whether they currently have a job or are looking/available for one.
• LFPR is different from the Worker Population Ratio (WPR), which measures the proportion of the population that is actually employed.

• Rural unemployment rate: 4.5% → 4.1% (lowest since January 2026)
• Urban unemployment rate: 6.8% (unchanged)
• Female WPR: 33.0% (up from 32.0% in August 2025)

4. TSO KAR LAKE

Current Context: Ladakh administration launched project to revive and restore shrinking Tso Kar Lake by diverting ~320 million litres of glacier water daily.

ABOUT TSO KAR LAKE

• Tso Kar is a high-altitude saltwater lake located in the Changthang region of Ladakh, on the Rupshu Plateau.
• It lies at an elevation of roughly 4,660 metres above sea level, making it one of India’s important high-altitude wetlands.
• Tso Kar forms part of the Tso Kar Wetland Complex, which also includes the nearby Startsapuk Tso.
• The wetland complex was designated a Ramsar Site in 2020, becoming India’s 42nd Ramsar Site at that time.
• The name Tso Kar refers to the white salt deposits around the lake produced by evaporation.
• Meaning:“White Lake” in Ladakhi
• Smallest of three prominent lakesin region (alongside Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri)
