2.  INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION

Current Context: International Day for South-South Cooperation is observed on 12 September to celebrate solidarity and collaboration among countries of the Global South.

ABOUT THE DAY

• The date commemorates the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA) in 1978.
• South-South Cooperation (SSC) refers to cooperation among developing countries of the Global South for sharing knowledge, technology, resources, expertise and development experiences.
• The UN General Assembly Resolution 58/220, adopted in 2003.
• Theme 2026:“Solidarity Rising: Global Alliance for Inclusive and Innovative Development”

3. WILDLIFE CRIME CONTROL BUREAU (WCCB)

Current Context: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has constituted a 4-member inquiry team of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) to investigate the appearance of five young orangutans in Balasore district, Odisha.

WILDLIFE TRAFFICKING ANGLE

• Orangutans are not native to India. Their natural distribution is in the tropical rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra in Southeast Asia.
• Therefore, finding five young individuals together in an Odisha forest is highly unusual.
• The major suspicion is that the orangutans may have been brought to India through an illegal wildlife-trafficking network.

ABOUT ORANGUTANS

• Orangutans are great apes, along with gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and humans.
• Orangutans are primarily arboreal great apes, spending much of their lives in trees.
• They belong to the genus Pongo.
• Three living species are recognised: Bornean orangutan, Sumatran orangutan and Tapanuli orangutan.
• They are highly intelligent, predominantly arboreal primates.
• Their diet consists mainly of fruits, along with leaves, bark, insects and other plant material.
• All three orangutan species are classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

ABOUT WCCB

• Established: 6 June 2007, became operational in 2008
• Legal Basis: Created under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, following the Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Act, 2006 under Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
• Headquarters: New Delhi
• Primary Objective: To combat organised wildlife crime, particularly illegal wildlife trade and trafficking.
• WCCB functions under the provisions of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, particularly Section 38(Z), which specifies its functions.

4. DIGVIJAY DIWAS 2026

Current Context: Digvijay Diwas is observed on 11 September to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s historic 1893 Chicago speech.

ABOUT DIGVIJAY DIWAS

• Event commemorated: His historic Chicago Address of 1893
• Venue: World’s Parliament of Religions, Chicago, USA
• His opening words, “Sisters and brothers of America”, received a highly enthusiastic response from the audience.
• Vivekananda represented India and Hinduism at the Parliament of Religions.
• His speech presented the Indian philosophical tradition, particularly its emphasis on tolerance, acceptance and harmony among religions.
• He highlighted that different religious traditions can coexist and contribute to universal brotherhood.
• Vivekananda’s Appeal:“Help and not Fight,” “Assimilation and not Destruction,” “Harmony and Peace and not Dissension”

ABOUT SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

• Original Name: Narendranath Datta
• Born: 12 January 1863, Kolkata, Bengal Presidency
• Guru: Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa
• Swami Vivekananda was one of the most influential Indian spiritual leaders, philosophers and social reformers of the 19th century.
• He played a major role in taking Vedanta and Indian spiritual philosophy to the West.
• The Ramakrishna Math represents the monastic organisation of the Ramakrishna Order.
• Its roots go back to the monastic brotherhood formed by the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna after his death in 1886.
• Under Vivekananda’s leadership, the monastic organisation developed into an organised institution.
• The permanent centre at Belur was established in the late 1890s..

Current Context: INS Mysore reached Lumut Naval Base, Malaysia, on 9 September 2026 to participate in Exercise Samudra Laksamana 4/26.

ABOUT EXERCISE SAMUDRA LAKSAMANA

• Samudra Laksamana is a bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).
• The exercise is aimed at strengthening naval interoperability, maritime cooperation and operational coordination between India and Malaysia.
• The exercise also contributes to India’s broader Act East Policy and its engagement with ASEAN and Indo-Pacific partners.

6. 22ND INDIA-US YUDH ABHYAS BEGINS IN TWO-THEATRE FORMAT

Current Context: The 22nd edition of Exercise Yudh Abhyas, the annual bilateral military exercise between the Indian Army and the US Army, is being conducted from 9-28 September 2026 in a two-theatre format, with training in Bikaner, Rajasthan, and Auli, Uttarakhand.

ABOUT YUDH ABHYAS

• The exercise is an annual bilateral Army exercise designed to improve operational coordination and interoperability between the two forces.
• The exercise began on 9 September, with the two forces focusing on interoperability across desert and high-altitude environments.
• The exercise series began in 2002 and has evolved from relatively small-unit training into more complex joint exercises.

8. ASIAN GAMES 2026 MASCOT: HONOHON

Current Context: HONOHON is the official mascot of the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026.

ABOUT HONOHON

• The mascot is inspired by the Shachihoko, a traditional Japanese mythical creature associated particularly with Nagoya.
• The Shachihoko is traditionally depicted with the head of a tiger and body of a fish and is prominently associated with the roof of Nagoya Castle.
• The name Honohon is derived from “Honoho”, an old Japanese term associated with flame.
• The flame imagery represents the passion and enthusiasm of athletes participating in the Asian Games.
