Context: Recently, a severe flash flood struck Nepal’s Bhotekoshi River system, causing extensive damage across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.

  • The Rasuwagadhi–Bhotekoshi–Trishuli corridor is strategically significant as it connects Nepal with Tibet and supports considerable cross-border trade and pilgrimage movement.

About Bhotekoshi Flash Flood and the Himalayan Flood Phenomenon

  • Satellite observations point towards a complex chain of events involving an ice avalanche, permafrost movement and rockslide.
  • Scientists have characterised the triggering mass movement as a sturzstrom, a highly destructive rock avalanche capable of travelling rapidly over considerable distances.
  • When rock combines with ice, snow, frozen soil and water, friction and resistance can decrease. This can accelerate the moving mass and cause it to evolve downstream into a debris flow and flood.
  • Therefore, the event differs from a conventional monsoon flood and demonstrates that Himalayan disasters can result from the interaction of several geological and climatic triggers.
