2.  INDIA’S EXTERNAL DEBT CLIMBS TO $762.8 BILLION IN FY26

Current Context: India’s external debt rose to $762.8 billion at the end of FY26, marking an increase of $26.3 billion from the previous year.

    • US Dollar: 55.5%

  • Long-term debt: $613.5 billion (↑$11.6 billion) accounted for about 4% of total external debt.
  • Short-term debt: Increased to 6% of total external debt (from 18.3%), ratio to foreign exchange reserves rose from 20.1% to 21.6%
  • External debt refers to the total outstanding debt owed by residents of a country to non-residents, which must be repaid in foreign currency, goods, or services.
  • It includes borrowings by: Central Government, State Governments, Reserve Bank of India, Banks, Corporates, Other financial institutions.

3. SAMAGRA SHISHU BAL SWASTHYA KARYAKRAM (SSBSK) LAUNCHED

Current Context: India has launched the Samagra Shishu Bal Swasthya Karyakram (SSBSK), a unified child healthcare programme providing home and community-based care from birth to 36 months.

ABOUT SSBSK

  • The Samagra Shishu Bal Swasthya Karyakram (SSBSK) during the 16th Conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW) in New Delhi on 30 June 2026.
  • The programme advances the vision of “Pehle Teen Saal Sampurn Dekhbhal”, recognising that the first three years of life are critical for child survival, nutrition, growth, and early brain development.
  • Introduces, for the first time, a risk-stratified approach for newborns and children identified as “at-risk”
  • At-risk children: Low birth weight, premature birth, delayed breastfeeding initiation, discharge from newborn care units, malnutrition, recurrent illnesses, developmental delays
  • Additional home visits: At-risk newborns – up to 9 visits in first 42 days, at-risk children – up to 8 additional visits until 36 months

4.  PM FAMILY CARE TRACKER (PM-FCT) LAUNCHED

Current Context: The Union Home and Cooperation Minister launched the PM Family Care Tracker (PM-FCT) as a pilot project in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

ABOUT PM-FCT

  • The platform aims to ensure that no eligible pregnant woman, mother, or child is left out of government welfare schemes through continuous digital monitoring and timely intervention.
  • An integrated digital welfare monitoring platform for tracking beneficiaries from pregnancy until 18 years of age.
  • Provides every child with a unique ID, linked to the Birth Registration Number or ABHA ID.
  • Type: Digital platform for maternal and child health, nutrition, and family welfare
  • Features: Digital Health Passports for individuals and families, dashboards for government welfare schemes, automated alerts for missed vaccinations and school dropouts

5.  BUREAU OF PORT SECURITY (BoPS) ESTABLISHED

Current Context: The Government of India has established the Bureau of Port Security (BoPS).

ABOUT BoPS

  • The Government of India has constituted the Bureau of Port Security (BoPS) as a statutory body to strengthen the security of ships and port facilities across the country.
  • The Bureau has been constituted under Section 13 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 2025, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW).
  • Modelled on: Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS)
  • Initially under: Directorate General of Shipping (renamed as Directorate General of Maritime Administration – DGMA)

6.  K9 VAJRA-T DEFENCE COOPERATION

Current Context: India and South Korea have expanded defence cooperation through the K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzer programme.

ABOUT K9 VAJRA-T

  • K9 Vajra-T is a 155 mm/52-calibre tracked self-propelled howitzer.
  • It is an Indian adaptation of South Korea’s K9 Thunder self-propelled artillery system.
  • Manufactured in India by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) under a technology transfer agreement with South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace.
  • Designed for operations in deserts and high-altitude regions, including Ladakh.
  • Indigenous components: 50-60%

10. INDIA’S FIRST BIOCHAR PLANT TO BOOST JOBS, CARBON CREDITS IN HIMACHAL

Current Context: Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reviewed the progress of the country’s first biochar plant, being established at Neri in Hamirpur district.

ABOUT THE BIOCHAR PLANT

  • Tripartite Agreement: Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (Nauni), Forest Department, and ProClime Services Private Limited (Chennai) – signed in August 2025
  • Biomass used: Pine needles, lantana, bamboo, and other plant-based material
  • Biomass purchase price: Rs 2.50 per kg (with performance-based incentives for quality)
  • Carbon credits expected: Approximately 28,800 credits over operational period
