3. RAMANUJAN FELLOWSHIP

Current Context: India and the United Kingdom have jointly launched the Ramanujan Junior Researchers Programme, enabling young Indian scientists to conduct theoretical research at London Institute for Mathematical Sciences (LIMS).

ABOUT RAMANUJAN JUNIOR RESEARCHERS PROGRAMME

  • Launched by: Government of India & Government of the United Kingdom

  • Implemented by: Department of Science and Technology (DST) in partnership with LIMS, London

  • Announced during: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to India

  • Named after: Legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan

  • Purpose: To promote research collaboration in theoretical sciences between India and the UK

Phases of the Programme

  1. Phase 1: Junior Visitors from JNCASR

    • Selection of PhD students from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR).

    • Up to six students to work at LIMS with senior theorists.

    • Focus on lectures, research ideas, and advanced theoretical problems.

  2. Phase 2: Ramanujan Junior Fellowships

    • Three-year fellowships for early-career Indian researchers in theoretical physics and mathematics.

    • Fellows to work full-time at LIMS, collaborating with British counterparts.

4. KAPAS KRANTI MISSION

Current Context: The Government of India has launched a ₹600 crore “Kapas Kranti Mission” to promote high-yield, long-staple cotton cultivation using advanced agricultural technology.

Current Context: According to the Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025 released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Bali, India ranks 9th globally in total forest area and 3rd in annual forest area gain.

9. DOCTRINE OF LIS PENDENS

Current Context: The Delhi High Court ruled that courts can exempt properties from the Doctrine of Lis Pendens to protect genuine owners from malicious or vexatious litigation.

ABOUT THE DOCTRINE OF LIS PENDENS

  • Meaning: Derived from Latin, meaning “pending litigation.”

  • Legal Source: Section 52, Transfer of Property Act (TPA), 1882.

  • Applicability:

    • Prevents transfer of immovable property while a related case is pending.

    • Ensures any transfer made during litigation remains subject to final judgment.

    • Protects rights of parties involved in the dispute.

NON-APPLICABILITY

  • When a mortgagor sells under a valid power deed.

  • In collusive or fraudulent suits.

11. METHANE EMISSIONS – UNEP REPORT

Current Context: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) released the fifth edition of its International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) report titled “An Eye on Methane: From Measurement to Momentum.”

  • Second-Biggest Climate Driver: After CO₂, responsible for one-third of total warming.

12. TRACHOMA ELIMINATION – FIJI

Current Context: Fiji has officially become the 26th country to eliminate trachoma as a public health problem, recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO).

  • Type: Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD)

  • Cause: Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium

  • Transmission: Through contact, contaminated surfaces, or flies

  • Health Impact: Repeated infections cause eyelid scarring, inward eyelashes, and blindness.
