ENVIRONMENT

3. JOINT CREDITING MECHANISM (JCM)

Current Context: India and Japan jointly launched the Operational Manual for the India–Japan Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in New Delhi, marking the transition from institutional preparation to actual project implementation.

ABOUT THE JOINT CREDITING MECHANISM (JCM)

  • It is a bilateral carbon-crediting mechanism through which Japan and its partner countries cooperate to deploy decarbonisation technologies, products, systems and infrastructure.
  • Emission reductions or removals achieved through these projects are quantified and converted into JCM credits.
  • These credits are allocated between the participating countries according to their respective contributions and can contribute to their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), subject to the rules of the mechanism.

INDIA-JAPAN JCM

  • India and Japan signed the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) establishing the JCM on 7 August 2025 in New Delhi.
  • This became India’s first bilateral cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
  • The first Joint Committee of the India-Japan JCM was held on 22 September 2025 in New Delhi and online.
  • The two countries adopted the Rule of Implementation (RoI) on 8 June 2026, establishing the governance and procedural framework for the mechanism.

ABOUT FLEET SUPPORT SHIP ‘SURYA’

  • A Fleet Support Ship (FSS) is a naval logistics vessel that provides essential supplies to warships while they are at sea.
  • It can replenish naval vessels with fuel, water, ammunition and other stores, allowing frontline warships to remain deployed for longer periods without returning to harbour.
  • Therefore, an FSS acts as a floating logistics and replenishment platform supporting the operational endurance of a naval fleet.

ABOUT ‘SURYA’

AWARDS & HONOURS

8. FRANCIS HALZEN WINS NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS 2026

Current Context: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics to Francis Halzen, University of Wisconsin-Madison, for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

ABOUT FRANCIS HALZEN

  • Francis Halzen is a Belgian-born American physicist and professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
  • He is the principal investigator of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and was a driving force behind developing the idea of using Antarctic ice as a giant neutrino detector.
  • His work transformed neutrinos from difficult-to-detect particles into powerful messengers for studying distant cosmic events.

WHAT ARE NEUTRINOS?

  • Neutrinos are electrically neutral subatomic particles with extremely weak interactions with matter.
  • They can travel through enormous amounts of matter, including the Earth itself, with very little interaction.
  • Because they are electrically neutral, their paths are not bent by magnetic fields. Therefore, neutrinos can carry information directly from their sources across the Universe.
  • However, their weak interaction makes them extremely difficult to detect. This required an enormous detector such as IceCube.

ICECUBE NEUTRINO OBSERVATORY

  • IceCube is a giant neutrino detector located deep beneath the ice at the South Pole, Antarctica.
  • It uses approximately one cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice as the detection medium and contains thousands of light-sensitive sensors.
  • When a neutrino occasionally collides with an atomic nucleus in the ice, it produces charged particles that generate a faint flash of light.
  • IceCube’s sensors detect these flashes and allow scientists to estimate the neutrino’s energy and direction.

SIGNIFICANCE

  • Helped establish neutrino astronomy as an important branch of modern astrophysics.
  • Contributed to the development of multi-messenger astronomy.
  • High-energy neutrinos can help investigate active galactic nuclei, supermassive black holes, exploding stars, gamma-ray bursts and other high-energy cosmic accelerators.

AWARDS & HONOURS

9. NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY 2026

Current Context: The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 has been awarded jointly to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai for their pioneering contributions to asymmetric organic synthesis.

ABOUT THE AWARD

  • Prize citation: “For the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.”
Laureate Prize Share Recognised For
Henri B. Kagan 1/2 Discovery of non-linear effects in asymmetric organic synthesis
Kenso Soai 1/2 Discovery of autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis

HENRI B. KAGAN

  • Nationality: French
  • Born: 1930, Boulogne-Billancourt, France
  • Institution: Université Paris-Sud, France

KENSO SOAI

  • Nationality: Japanese
  • Born: 1950, Hiroshima, Japan
  • Institution: Tokyo University of Science, Japan

ABOUT ASYMMETRIC ORGANIC SYNTHESIS

  • A branch of chemistry concerned with producing molecules in which one particular three-dimensional arrangement is formed preferentially over another.
  • Many molecules exist in two forms that are mirror images of each other, known as enantiomers.
  • Although such molecules may have the same chemical formula, their biological effects can be very different.
  • Important in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, biotechnology, fine chemicals and materials science.

HENRI B. KAGAN AND NON-LINEAR EFFECTS

  • Recognised for his work on non-linear effects in asymmetric synthesis.
  • Demonstrated that small differences in the chirality of catalysts could sometimes lead to much larger changes in the selectivity of chemical reactions.

KENSO SOAI AND ASYMMETRIC AUTOCATALYSIS

  • Best known for his discovery of asymmetric autocatalysis.
  • In an autocatalytic reaction, a product of the reaction itself acts as a catalyst and helps produce more of the same product.
  • Demonstrated that an extremely small initial imbalance between two mirror-image molecules could be amplified dramatically through autocatalysis.
  • This phenomenon became known as the Soai reaction.

ABOUT CHIRALITY

  • Chirality refers to the property of a molecule that cannot be superimposed on its mirror image.
  • Common analogy: left hand and right hand are mirror images but cannot be perfectly superimposed.
  • Important in medicines because two mirror-image forms of the same molecule may interact differently with biological systems.
