Context
- India and Germany recently reviewed bilateral cooperation in energy security, electrification, low-carbon development and carbon markets.

About India–Germany Relations
- India and Germany are key partners in the India–EU strategic frameworkand share converging interests in climate action, clean energy, technology, trade, defence and multilateralism.
- 2026 is particularly significant as the two countries mark 75 years of diplomatic relations and 25 years of their Strategic Partnership.

2. Coral Bleaching Events Becoming More Frequent
Context
- The seventh Status of Coral Reefs of the World report released by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) highlights a sharp reduction in the recovery time available to coral reefs between successive bleaching events.
- Increasingly frequent episodes of severe marine heat stress are leaving corals with less time to recover, increasing the risk of long-term reef degradation.
Major Highlights
- Since 2010, major disturbances have occurred approximately every four to six years in many regions, compared with roughly once every decade during the earlier period.
- Global hard coral cover has declined by an estimated 5% compared with the 1980–2009 reference period.
- In 2024, more than 40% of coral reefs experienced heat stress severe enough to create a significant risk of bleaching and coral mortality.
- The report cautions that increasingly frequent marine heatwaves, driven by climate change and intensified by local environmental pressures, could push coral ecosystems towards persistent decline.
- Without substantial reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions, global warming could exceed 2°C, while marine heatwaves could become more frequent and intense, placing additional pressure on coral reefs.
What are Corals?
- Corals are marine invertebrates belonging to the phylum Cnidaria.
- Coral colonies consist of numerous small, soft-bodied organisms called polyps.
- These polyps secrete a hard, chalk-like calcium carbonate skeleton around themselves.
- Over long periods, millions of polyps collectively form the large carbonate structures known as coral reefs.
- Appearance:
- Corals may occur in colours ranging from red and purple to blue, although brown and green shades are particularly common.
- Their vibrant colours are largely associated with microscopic symbiotic algae known as zooxanthellae.
- Types of Coral Reefs:
- Fringing reefs: Develop directly along coastlines.
- Barrier reefs: Occur farther from the coastline, separated from land by a lagoon or deeper water.
- Atolls: Circular or ring-shaped reefs generally associated with submerged or sinking volcanic islands.
- Coral Reefs in India:
- Gulf of Kutch;
- Gulf of Mannar;
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands;
- Lakshadweep Islands; and
- Malvan coast.
- Significance:
- Coral reefs provide food, shelter, breeding grounds and nursery habitats for a large proportion of marine life.
- They act as important refuges for marine biodiversity.
- Coral ecosystems also support the livelihoods, food security and recreational activities of more than one billion people living in coastal regions globally.
Coral Bleaching
- Coral bleaching occurs when corals expel the microscopic symbiotic algae living within their tissues, generally in response to environmental stress, particularly elevated ocean temperatures.
- The loss of these algae causes corals to lose their characteristic colour and appear pale or white.
- Since the algae provide important nutritional benefits to corals, prolonged bleaching can leave them vulnerable to:
- Starvation; and
- Disease.
- Bleaching does not necessarily mean that the coral is dead.
- If ocean temperatures fall and environmental conditions return towards normal, corals may regain their symbiotic algae and gradually recover.
Reasons for Coral Bleaching
- Marine Heatwaves and Climate Change:
- Rising sea-surface temperatures disrupt the symbiotic relationship between corals and their algae.
- Prolonged heat stress can result in widespread bleaching and, in severe cases, coral mortality.
- Ocean Acidification:
- Increasing atmospheric CO₂ is absorbed by oceans, lowering seawater pH.
- This makes it more difficult for corals to build and maintain their calcium carbonate skeletons.
- Pollution:
- Runoff carrying fertilisers, pesticides and heavy metals such as lead can damage coral health and reduce reef resilience.
- Physical Disturbance:
- Coastal development, destructive or unsustainable fishing practices, sedimentation and coral mining can physically damage reefs or cover them with sediments.
- Overfishing:
- Declining populations of herbivorous fish can allow algae to proliferate on reefs.
- Excessive algal growth can further weaken already stressed coral ecosystems.
Can Corals Recover from Bleaching?
- Yes, corals can recover from bleaching, provided that the environmental stress is reduced and ocean temperatures return to suitable levels.
- When conditions improve, symbiotic algae can return to coral tissues, allowing the corals to gradually restore their colour and physiological health.
- However, increasingly frequent bleaching events shorten the recovery window and can make repeated stress increasingly damaging to coral ecosystems.
