1. India-UK Trade Deal
Context: The India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the accompanying Double Contribution Convention (DCC) entered into force on 15 July 2026. The agreement marks a historic milestone in bilateral economic relations and represents one of India’s most comprehensive and ambitious trade agreements with a developed economy.
About India–UK CETA
The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is a next-generation Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom that goes far beyond conventional tariff reductions.
Unlike traditional FTAs that primarily focus on trade in goods, CETA covers a wide range of areas including:
- Trade in goods and services;
- Digital trade and e-commerce;
- Investment facilitation;
- Government procurement;
- Labour and environmental standards;
- Innovation and intellectual property;
- MSME cooperation; and
- Regulatory cooperation.
The agreement seeks to deepen bilateral economic integration by reducing trade barriers, improving market access and creating a predictable and transparent framework for businesses operating in both countries.
Why is India–UK CETA Important?
- The agreement is strategically significant because it strengthens economic ties between two major democracies at a time of growing uncertainty in global trade and supply chains.
- Firstly, the agreement is expected to substantially increase bilateral trade and investment flows by providing greater certainty and market access to businesses in both countries.
- Secondly, it supports India’s objective of integrating more deeply into global value chains and expanding exports to developed markets.
- Thirdly, CETA strengthens the broader India–UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, thereby linking economic cooperation with cooperation in defence, technology, education, climate action and innovation.
- The agreement also complements India’s recent trade agreements with the UAE, Australia and EFTA countries, reflecting India’s shift towards high-quality and comprehensive trade agreements.
- Furthermore, it aligns with India’s long-term developmental vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which seeks to transform India into a developed economy through export-led growth and greater global integration.
Trade Benefits to India
- Better Access to Markets for Goods: The UK will immediately scrap tariffs on 96.8% of tariff lines, which account for 97.7% of India’s export value.
- The quota-based tariff concessions will be extended to an additional 2% of tariff lines, representing 1.8% of trade value.
- Overall, 98.8% of tariff lines and 99.5% of India’s trade value will enjoy preferential access to the UK market.
- Major Beneficiary Sectors: Textiles and garments; leather products; gems and jewellery; engineering goods; marine products; chemicals; agricultural products; and processed food.
- It is expected to improve India’s export competitiveness in one of its largest developed markets.
- Reduction in Non-Tariff Barriers: The agreement contains dedicated chapters on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures; and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT).
- These provisions are intended to ensure that regulatory standards are transparent, science-based, and do not become unnecessary barriers to trade.
- Boosting India’s Service Sector Sector:The UK has improved access to markets under CETA in areas like computer and IT enabled services, consultancy and environmental services.
- Indian companies can establish branch offices, subsidiaries and representative offices in the UK to help them establish long-term commercial presence.
Double Contribution Convention (DCC)
- Earlier, Indian professionals working temporarily in the UK had to contribute to India’s social security system, and UK’s National Insurance (social security).
- However, most Indian professionals remain in the UK for less than five years, whereas UK social security benefits generally require around 10 years of contributions.
- It resulted in double payments without corresponding benefits.
- Now Indian workers and their employers will not have to pay UK social security contributions for up to five years, as long as they continue to pay into the social security system in India.
- Expected Benefits:
- Around 90% of Indian professionals in UK to benefit
- Approximately 75,000 Indian workers.
- More than 900 employers.
- Savings of nearly 23% of salarythat would otherwise go towards UK social security contributions.
- The DCC reduces the cost of overseas employment significantly and improves the competitiveness of Indian service providers.
What Does the United Kingdom Gain?
- Improved Access to Indian Markets
- India has agreed to remove tariffs immediately on goods accounting for 3% of trade value.
- Tariffs on another 47% of trade value will be gradually phased out, while quota-based tariff concessions will apply to an additional 1%.
- Overall, around 5% of tariff lines and 89.4% of trade value will receive preferential treatment.
- Consumer Benefits
Indian consumers are likely to benefit from lower prices for several British products including:
- Scotch whisky;
- Premium automobiles;
- Engineering products;
- Industrial machinery; and
- High-end manufactured goods.
- Services Liberalisation
India has opened selected service sectors to UK companies, including:
- Accounting services;
- Auditing services;
- Financial services;
- Telecommunications services; and
- Environmental services.
Eligible British firms can provide services in India without necessarily establishing a commercial presence in the country.
India has also agreed to facilitate recognition of certain UK professional qualifications in sectors such as law and accounting.
Unique Features of the Agreement
- Automobile Tariff Liberalisation: For the first time in an Indian FTA, automobile imports receive tariff concessions.
- During the first year, 20,000 completely built units (CBUs)from the U.K. can be imported under concessional tariffs.
- Tariffs reduce from the normal 66–110%to approximately 30–50%, depending on vehicle category.
- Over time, quota increases to 37,000 vehicles by Year 5, tariff falls to 10% by Year 5, and separate quotas exist for electric/alternative fuel vehicles and commercial vehicles.
- India has protected domestic industry through the use of tariff-rate quotas (TRQs)rather than through the total elimination of tariffs.
- Government Procurement:
- Access for UK Companies:UK companies eligible to participate in Central Government procurement as Class-II local suppliers under India’s procurement rules;
- Access to Indian Firms:The UK’s relevant procurement markets of the UK Central Government for Indian suppliers is worth around £90 billion (US$ 122 billion approx.) and India’s reciprocal opportunities are estimated to be in the region of US$ 114 billion.
- Sensitive sectors like Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), State Governments and local bodies are excluded.
Key Challenges Ahead
- Concerns of the Domestic Industry: UK imports could mean more competition for sectors such as cars and alcoholic drinks.
- Effective Implementation:It will be essential to the smooth implementation of tariff concessions, customs procedures and regulatory commitments.
- Non Tariff Barriers: Differences in standards, SPS and TBT regulations may still impact market access even after the agreement.
- MSME Readiness:Small and medium enterprises need support in meeting UK quality standards and leveraging FTA advantages.
- Recognition of Services and Skills:Timely recognition of professional qualifications and facilitated mobility of skilled professionals continues to be important.
- Risk of trade deficit: India will have to ensure that higher imports are matched by higher exports to gain maximum benefits from the agreement.
- Awareness and Utilisation:Exporters in particular and businesses in general need to be more aware of CETA provisions to be able to claim preferential benefits effectively.
Strengthening Measures
- Boost Export Competitiveness: Improve product quality, innovation and compliance with UK standards to maximise market access.
- Support MSMEs:Provide financial assistance, technology upgradation and awareness programmes to enable MSMEs to take advantage of CETA opportunities.
- Improve Trade Facilitation:Reduce trade transaction costs through streamlined customs procedures, promotion of digital trade, and effective implementation of FTA provisions.
- Diversify Exports:Promote value added exports in the areas of pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, electronics, textiles and services.
- Skills Development: Training professionals to world standards and enabling mutual recognition of qualifications.
- Monitor Sensitive Sectors:Periodically assess the effect on domestic industries, and apply safeguard measures when allowed under the agreement.
- Promote Investment and Innovation: Call for bilateral investment, technology transfer and joint R&D to deepen long-term economic cooperation.
Conclusion
- The India–UK CETA represents one of India’s most significant trade agreements in recent decades and marks a major step towards integrating the Indian economy with advanced global markets.
- By improving market access, enhancing labour mobility, strengthening supply chains and promoting investment, the agreement has the potential to transform bilateral economic relations.

2. ISRO Clears Three Key Gaganyaan Crew Module Safety Tests
Context: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed three crucial qualification tests related to the safety and reliability of the Crew Module (CM) of the Gaganyaan Mission. These tests represent a major milestone in India’s first human spaceflight programme and demonstrate ISRO’s progress towards ensuring the safe launch, re-entry and recovery of Indian astronauts.
The tests validated three critical systems of the Crew Module, namely:
- Crew Module Up-righting System (CMUS);
- Crew Module Service Module Connect Disconnect System (CSCDS); and
- Structural integrity of the Crew Module during Apex Cover separation.
About the Three Qualification Tests
- Crew Module Up-righting System (CMUS)
- The first test involved the Crew Module Up-righting System (CMUS), which is designed to ensure the safety of astronauts after the Crew Module lands in the sea.
- After re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere, the Crew Module will descend using parachutes and splash down in the ocean. Due to sea conditions or impact forces, the module may land in an inverted or sideways position, which can endanger astronauts and delay rescue operations.
- The CMUS automatically restores the capsule to an upright and stable position after splashdown.
- The system uses stored cold-gas technology, where compressed gas is released into inflatable bags attached to the capsule, helping it rotate and stabilize itself on the sea surface.
- This system is extremely important because astronauts can safely exit the capsule only when it remains upright and stable during recovery operations.
- Crew Module Service Module Connect Disconnect System (CSCDS)
The second test validated the mechanism responsible for separating the Crew Module (CM) from the Service Module (SM) during re-entry.
The Service Module provides:
- Power supply;
- Propulsion;
- Thermal management;
- Avionics support; and
- Orbital manoeuvring capability.
However, during re-entry only the Crew Module returns to Earth while the Service Module burns up in the atmosphere.
The Crew Module and Service Module are connected through a special umbilical connection mechanism known as the Crew Module Service Module Connect Disconnect System (CSCDS).
The system consists of two components:
- CSU-1, located on the Crew Module side; and
- CSU-2, located on the Service Module side.
- During de-orbiting, the Service Module first separates after the disconnection of CSU-1. Subsequently, just before atmospheric re-entry, CSU-2 also separates completely.
- Successful functioning of this mechanism is essential because any failure in separation could compromise the safety of the crew during re-entry.
- Validation of Apex Cover Separation Loads
- The third qualification test evaluated the Crew Module’s structural ability to withstand the forces generated during the separation of the Apex Cover.
- The Apex Cover protects the parachutes and associated recovery systems during launch and orbital operations.
- Before parachute deployment during descent, this cover must be jettisoned so that the parachutes can open properly.
- The separation of the cover generates substantial mechanical and structural loads on the Crew Module.
- The successful test confirmed that the Crew Module can safely withstand these forces without affecting astronaut safety or the functioning of the parachute system.
Gaganyaan Mission
- Purpose: To demonstrate the capability to launch human beings(three crew members) to low earth orbit and bring them back safely to earth by landing.
- This manned mission will be the first of ISRO’s human spaceflight missions. The US, Russia and China are the only three countries to have conducted human spaceflights yet.
- Launch vehicle:The Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3) is the launch vehicle for the Gaganyaan mission.
- Crew Escape System (CES): HLVM3 consists of CES powered by a set of quick acting, high burn rate solid motors which ensures that Crew Module along with the crew is taken to a safe distance in case of any emergency either at launch pad or during ascent phase.
- Orbital Module:The Orbiter Module will orbit the Earth, and it consists of Crew Module (CM) and Service Module (SM) connected by a joint. It is designed to keep the crew safe during ascent, orbital phase, and re-entry.
- The Crew Module (CM)is the habitable space with the Earth-like environment in space for the crew.
- Service Module (SM):It will be used to provide the necessary support to CM while in orbit. It is an unpressurized structure containing thermal system, propulsion system, power systems, avionics systems and deployment mechanisms.
Crew Module Re-entry and Recovery Process
After completing the orbital mission, the Service Module fires its thrusters to reduce orbital velocity and initiate re-entry.
Following this:
- The Service Module separates from the Crew Module.
- The Crew Module enters the Earth’s atmosphere.
- Atmospheric drag slows down the capsule through aerobraking.
- The Apex Cover is jettisoned.
- Parachutes deploy sequentially.
- The Crew Module safely splashes down in the sea.
- Recovery teams retrieve the astronauts and capsule.
Meanwhile, the Service Module disintegrates due to intense atmospheric heating.
Why is Sphere-Cone Configuration Preferred?
- The design of a re-entry vehicle is critical for astronaut safety.
- A perfectly spherical spacecraft offers maximum internal volume and minimum structural weight. However, it generates virtually no aerodynamic lift and therefore falls rapidly through the atmosphere, exposing astronauts to dangerously high g-forces.
- For this reason, most modern crew capsules adopt a sphere-cone configuration.
- The Gaganyaan Crew Module also follows this design.
- The blunt spherical base creates a detached shockwave that keeps extremely hot gases away from the spacecraft surface, reducing thermal stress.
At the same time, the conical section provides:
- Aerodynamic stability;
- Controlled lift generation; and
- Better guidance during descent.
This allows astronauts to experience a safer and more comfortable re-entry.
Dynamic Instability During Re-entry
- Dynamic instability refers to a situation where the Crew Module develops uncontrolled oscillations while travelling through the atmosphere.
- The problem becomes particularly severe near the speed of sound because shockwaves continuously shift around the vehicle, creating unstable aerodynamic forces.
- If these oscillations become excessive, they can threaten the structural integrity of the spacecraft and the safety of astronauts.
- To overcome this challenge, the Crew Module continuously uses small reaction control thrusters to maintain the correct orientation and stabilize the spacecraft throughout descent.
Significance of These Tests
The successful completion of these qualification tests is significant for several reasons:
- They validate critical astronaut safety systems.
- They increase confidence in India’s human spaceflight capability.
- They demonstrate India’s growing expertise in complex space technologies.
- They reduce mission risk before crewed flights.
- They strengthen India’s position among major spacefaring nations.
These tests also pave the way for future missions involving:
- Long-duration human spaceflight;
- Development of an Indian space station;
- Lunar missions; and
- Deep space exploration.

- The successful qualification of these systems marks another major milestone in the Gaganyaan programme.
- However, ISRO must continue conducting integrated system tests, abort tests and uncrewed demonstration missions before sending astronauts into space.
- The Gaganyaan Mission is not merely a technological project but a strategic investment in India’s long-term ambitions in human space exploration.
- The knowledge and technologies developed under Gaganyaan will form the foundation for India’s future missions involving space stations, lunar exploration and eventually interplanetary human missions.
