Current Context: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is observed annually on 15 June to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect, exploitation, and discrimination faced by older persons worldwide.

ABOUT THE DAY

  • Launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) with support from the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2011.
  • Theme 2026: “Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work”
  • Organized by: UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), INPEA, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)
  • Elder abuse refers to a single or repeated act-or failure to act-within a relationship of trust that causes harm or distress to an older person.

Current Context: World Wind Day 2026 is observed annually on 15 June to spread awareness about the importance and potential of wind energy.

ABOUT THE DAY

  • Started In: 2007 as “Wind Day” by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA). Now known as WindEurope
  • Became Global In: 2009 when EWEA joined hands with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), and the observance was renamed Global Wind Day.
  • Purpose: Highlight how wind power can support clean electricity generation, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and promote sustainable energy solutions
  • No official theme has been announced yet for 2026. Recent campaigns have focused on clean energy transition, climate action, energy security, and sustainable development.

About WIND ENERGY

  • Wind energy is the energy generated by converting the kinetic energy of moving air into electricity using wind turbines. It is a renewable, clean, and non-polluting source of energy.
  • Wind power is categorized into:

  • Offshore Wind Energy – Wind turbines installed in sea/ocean waters.

4. BIS RELEASES IS 20201:2026 STANDARD FOR COMMUNITY SEED BANKS

Current Context: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released IS 20201:2026, a new standard for Community Seed Bank Management.

  • India’s first standardized framework for the management of Community Seed Banks (CSBs) to conserve indigenous crop varieties and strengthen climate-resilient agriculture.
  • Draft prepared under convenorship of: ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR)
  • Nature: Voluntary and certifiable management system standard.
  • Covers: Seed collection and acquisition, seed cleaning and processing, drying and storage procedures, seed viability testing, documentation and record management, quality assurance, seed regeneration practices, risk management systems
  • Complementary government support: National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM) provides one-time financial assistance of ₹50 lakh for establishing community seed banks
  • Legal safeguards: Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FR) Act, 2001. Biological Diversity Act, 2002

About COMMUNITY SEED BANKS (CSBs)

  • Community Seed Banks are decentralized, community-managed repositories that collect, conserve, multiply, store, and exchange locally adapted seeds. They help preserve traditional crop varieties and farmers’ knowledge systems. They provide access to quality seeds during climatic shocks such as droughts, floods, and erratic rainfall.

About NBPGR

  • National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR). It is the nodal institution of India for the management of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR). Functions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.

Current Context: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has been ranked India’s top container port and 22nd globally in Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2025.

  • JNPA improved its ranking by one position, moving to 22nd place globally in the CPPI 2025.

  • France emphasized that India occupies a central place in its foreign policy and strategic outreach ahead of the G7 Summit 2026.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit France (13-14 June 2026) before participating in the G7 Summit at Évian (16-17 June 2026).
  • France stated that India has been invited to participate in all G7 tracks, reflecting India’s growing global influence and importance in international decision-making

Current Context: The United States has operationalized SOLAR-1, for space weather monitoring.

ABOUT SOLAR-1

  • SOLAR-1 (Space Weather Observations at L1 to Advance Readiness-1) is the first U.S. satellite dedicated exclusively to operational space weather monitoring.
  • Operated by: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
  • Launch vehicle: SpaceX Falcon 9
  • Orbit position: Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 1 (L1), about 1.6 million kilometres from Earth toward the Sun
  • Primary mission: Continuous monitoring of solar activity including solar flares, solar wind, coronal mass ejections (CMEs)
  • Key capability: Transmits CME images to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center within 30 minutes (compared to up to eight hours for older systems)

WHAT IS SPACE WEATHER?

  • Space weather refers to conditions in space primarily driven by the Sun, including solar flares, solar winds, and coronal mass ejections.
  • Severe space weather can disrupt: GPS navigation systems, Radio communications, Power transmission networks, Satellites and spacecraft operations.

About Lagrange Points

  • Lagrange Points are positions in space where the gravitational forces of two large celestial bodies (such as the Sun and Earth) and the orbital motion of a smaller object balance each other.
  • They were discovered by Joseph-Louis Lagrange, an Italian-French mathematician, in 1772.
  • Every two-body system (e.g., Sun-Earth, Earth-Moon) has five Lagrange Points, designated as L1, L2, L3, L4, and L5.

9. MASROOR ROCK-CUT TEMPLES

Current Context: The Masroor Rock-Cut Temples, tucked away in the hills of Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Valley, remain an extraordinary piece of Indian heritage that is mostly ignored.

ABOUT THE TEMPLES

  • Masroor Rock-Cut Temples are an early 8th-century rock-cut Hindu temple complex located in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, in the Beas River Valley.
  • The entire complex is carved from a single monolithic sandstone rock, making it one of the few monolithic rock-cut temple complexes in India.
  • Often called the “Ellora of the Himalayas” due to its resemblance to the rock-cut architecture of Ellora.
  • The complex consists of 15 interconnected temples arranged around a principal shrine.
  • It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)
  • Location: Kangra Valley of Beas River, Himachal Pradesh
  • Architectural style: North Indian Nagara architecture style
