Current Context: World Asthma Day 2026 will be observed on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, led by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA).

  • Theme 2026:“Access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma, still an urgent need”
  • First Observed:1998 (started alongside first World Asthma Meeting in Barcelona, Spain)
  • Global Impact:Asthma affects over 260 million people globally; India has over 34 million people affected
  • Spirometry Test:Common lung function test measuring FVC (total air breathed out) and FEV1 (air breathed out in first second)

3. CANADA BECOMES FIRST NON-EUROPEAN COUNTRY TO ATTEND EPC SUMMIT

Current Context: Canada became the first non-European country to participate in a European Political Community (EPC) summit at the 8th EPC meeting in Yerevan, Armenia, on 4 May 2026.

Current Context: Samarth Panchayat portal is a digital platform developed by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj for managing Own Source Revenue (OSR) in Gram Panchayats.

  • Features:Online demand generation, digital payment collection, asset management, real-time revenue monitoring
  • Pilots:Completed in Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh

  • Dashboard (as of 3 May 2026):15,110 GPs with submitted resolutions; 4,826,187 taxpayers; 938,928 registered properties

6. HAZARIBAG BECOMES INDIA’S FIRST PEARL FARMING CLUSTER

Current Context: Hazaribag in Jharkhand has been notified as India’s first pearl farming cluster under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

ABOUT THE CLUSTER

  • Notified as Pearl Cluster:30 August 2024
  • Production:02 lakh pearls from Hazaribag district alone (NFDB)
  • Species Used:Hyriopsis cumingii (Vietnamese mussel species)
  • PMMSY:Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (central scheme for fisheries development) was launched in September 2020 with an aim to double the income of fish farmers.

7. GOVERNMENT TO LAUNCH SACHET MOBILE-BASED DISASTER ALERT SYSTEM

Current Context: Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia will launch SACHET, a mobile-based disaster communication system.

  • Developed by:Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT)
  • Collaboration with:National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
